Faux Bois (literally false wood) carving became popular in the late 19th century in Europe. Predominantly found in garden and 'Grotto' furniture of cast iron and stone the technique strived to imitate nature in modern materials. Even an entire bridge was sculpted in faux bois concrete in 1873.
